Food For Thought (Poetry)

09th October 2011
Think of me as silver —
quick and lithe —
and canny of that ugly hook
you dangle here
imagining I’m hungry —
always a sucker for
a wriggly worm.

My mind's on higher things —
I squint at sky and wonder
at the stars —
the whole shebang —
the airy universe a mirror of
my watery domain.

I try to tell you —
let my thoughts bubble up —
yet if you see my lips move
you fail to read the signs —
or the semaphore of fins
flashing the SOS —
Share Our Secret!

You cannot see past simple shapes —
your mind is trapped
in symbolism’s cul-de-sac.
I cannot share my wisdom
even eye to eye —
you have forgotten how to be at ease
in your old element.
