For All That's Past (Poetry)
18th June 2023
I have no way of telling you
how much I miss you now
no way to get my message
across the darkening void
of all these spent years
you are a memory of love —
a warmly-smiling ghost
that haunts and teases
reminding me of better times
and reviving tender feelings
I imagined long-dead
But my mind’s eye sees you
recalls perfectly your youth
and couples it with mine
we were new — fresh — untired
of life and still eager
to explore its possibilities
and for a while at least
we found ourselves in each other
that was how it seemed
when Romance had us locked
in a dream that failed to last
And yet I miss you still
my thoughts turn your way
I hear your voice and an ache
runs through me
a bitter-sweet yearning
for all that’s past
and can never be again
how much I miss you now
no way to get my message
across the darkening void
of all these spent years
you are a memory of love —
a warmly-smiling ghost
that haunts and teases
reminding me of better times
and reviving tender feelings
I imagined long-dead
But my mind’s eye sees you
recalls perfectly your youth
and couples it with mine
we were new — fresh — untired
of life and still eager
to explore its possibilities
and for a while at least
we found ourselves in each other
that was how it seemed
when Romance had us locked
in a dream that failed to last
And yet I miss you still
my thoughts turn your way
I hear your voice and an ache
runs through me
a bitter-sweet yearning
for all that’s past
and can never be again
