Forty-Five Years On (Poetry)
18th June 2023
Forty-five years on
and I don’t even
know if you’re dead or
alive or if you
pause to remember ...
It’s so long ago
we took those vows in
blissful ignorance
of what was to come —
how time would change us
Words that echoed round
that big old church and
disappeared quick as
love and promises
born so breakable
You a stray comet
veering past my world
the pull of bodies
then the letting go
brushing off hurt’s dust
North into the void
a separation
of universes
your trail a streak seen
through my telescope
and I don’t even
know if you’re dead or
alive or if you
pause to remember ...
It’s so long ago
we took those vows in
blissful ignorance
of what was to come —
how time would change us
Words that echoed round
that big old church and
disappeared quick as
love and promises
born so breakable
You a stray comet
veering past my world
the pull of bodies
then the letting go
brushing off hurt’s dust
North into the void
a separation
of universes
your trail a streak seen
through my telescope
