Foul Play (Poetry)
15th July 2012
He’d looked so peaceful —
why should anyone suspect foul play?
Not so deceitful —
her careful plot that sent him on his way.
A mercy killing —
too many years they’d both endured the pain
and, while not willing,
he’d swallowed pills to set her free again.
He didn’t suffer —
she had no doubt he didn’t feel a thing,
her part was tougher —
hiding the relief that death can bring.
She wasn’t sorry —
experienced no sense of real remorse,
her only worry
insurance — was his policy in force?
Her unease niggled —
anxiety crawled deep inside her head,
it gnawed and wriggled —
causing her to question as it fed.
The pay-off soothed it —
her prize for quietly bending cast iron rules,
the money proved it —
confirmed that playing fair is for life’s fools.
why should anyone suspect foul play?
Not so deceitful —
her careful plot that sent him on his way.
A mercy killing —
too many years they’d both endured the pain
and, while not willing,
he’d swallowed pills to set her free again.
He didn’t suffer —

hiding the relief that death can bring.
She wasn’t sorry —
