Funny What You Miss (Poetry)
18th June 2023
Funny, I never
liked the woman on
the ground floor but now
she’s gone it’s strange how
I miss seeing her
That dog across the
street who barked half the
night, since he died I
find I lie awake
listening for him
The brewery shut
all those years ago
yet still think I catch
that sickly malt smell
wafting faint and warm
I miss the sight of
my father, his shirt
sleeves rolled up as he
pushed the lawn mower
and made straight green stripes
Breakfast smells haunt me
from childhood’s kitchen
such phantom senses
trigger memory
no scale can weigh loss
liked the woman on
the ground floor but now
she’s gone it’s strange how
I miss seeing her
That dog across the
street who barked half the
night, since he died I
find I lie awake
listening for him
The brewery shut
all those years ago
yet still think I catch
that sickly malt smell
wafting faint and warm
I miss the sight of
my father, his shirt
sleeves rolled up as he
pushed the lawn mower
and made straight green stripes
Breakfast smells haunt me
from childhood’s kitchen
such phantom senses
trigger memory
no scale can weigh loss
