Getting On (Poetry)

07th April 2019
I took time out from the morning
to ponder on the past —
all the dreams that came to nothing
and the loves that didn’t last
disappointments glowed like bonfires
burning long into the dusk
and their scarves of smoke hung tattered
thinned to memory’s soft musk

All was shadows stretching backwards
through the dimness of regret
over chances never taken
or the treacherous sure bet —
this whole history of choices
that had somehow brought me here
to a place of indecision
and a future far from clear ...

So I had a cup of coffee
while I took another pill
and I watched the busy birds that perched
upon my window sill
thinking they were never sorry
for themselves — they just got on
with life. The dark cloud lifted
and my gloomy mood was gone
