God's House (Poetry)

11th September 2011
A plain design with plain intent,
devoid of frill or ornament,
free from vain embellishment
the greystone chapel stands.

No grinning gargoyles leering down
but windows stare and rooftiles frown —
four solid walls to save the town
as preacher wrings his hands.

From within a thunderous voice
warns his flock they have no choice —
relinquish sin, repent, rejoice
and foil the Devil’s plans.

God’s house is a modest one
meant for hymns devoutly sung
and prayers said in the mother tongue
so He will understand.
