Going Their Separate Ways (Poetry)

31st March 2019
The hurt’s too deep for crying
the cost’s too much for tears
love’s gone — there’s no use trying
to count back carefree years

It vanished on some morning
they never felt it go
no light — no sudden dawning
the first and last to know

They should have seen it coming —
how could it hope to last
with sands of time now running
unstoppable and fast?

Their happy hour’s over
they search the twilight zone
to find an old-time lover
spent hearts dwell best alone
