Going Underground (Poetry)

Not unlike Alice
following the white
rabbit without a
second thought she went
downwards with the crowd

into a maze of
long well-lit tunnels
flooded with people
all in a hurry
as though very late

pushing and shoving
no ‘Excuse me’ or
‘Please could I get past?’
manners forgotten
in the frantic rush

A hot blast of air
the roar and rattle
of a dragon-train
that stretched its steel jaws
victims tumbled in ...

planet Earth is not
the Eden we thought —
