Grabbing Some Breakfast (Poetry)

07th April 2024
Early morning light
warms for a brief while
skinny winter twigs
and draws finches there
to share scant repast

A rowdy canteen
all chirp and flutter
while changing places
grabbing whatever
Nature might offer

No pecking order
or mannerly queue
but more a matter
of getting in quick
each bird for himself

A riotous scene
flurries of feathers
both goldfinch and green
swarming like pirates
they strip the tree clean

As though some shrill note
sounds somewhere on high
each stops in mid-peck
takes off to the sky
group plundering done
