Growing Room (Poetry)
23rd April 2015
We do not have a garden
we live in a top flat
we’ve got two window boxes
and we make do with that.
Geraniums and pansies
are mostly all that grows
we tried some herbs and heathers
but had no luck with those.
We sowed a mix of marigolds
but birds ate all the seeds
the pansies come up every year
and so do lots of weeds.
We won’t win any prizes
at Chelsea or at Kew
our efforts fail to qualify
the dahlias died too.
We do not have a garden
but we’ve many books on plants
and tend our window boxes
like a pair of anxious aunts.
We fuss over our cuttings
we whisper and we croon
we’d love a lawn with borders
but we’ve got no bloomin’ room!
we live in a top flat
we’ve got two window boxes
and we make do with that.
Geraniums and pansies
are mostly all that grows
we tried some herbs and heathers
but had no luck with those.
We sowed a mix of marigolds
but birds ate all the seeds
the pansies come up every year
and so do lots of weeds.
We won’t win any prizes

our efforts fail to qualify
the dahlias died too.
We do not have a garden
but we’ve many books on plants
and tend our window boxes
like a pair of anxious aunts.
We fuss over our cuttings
we whisper and we croon
we’d love a lawn with borders
but we’ve got no bloomin’ room!
