Homes For All (Poetry)
20th November 2022
We used to sleep in doorways
or sometimes in the park
few other places we could stay
on nights so cold and dark
But then there came the panic —
some virus hit the town
it turned the streets near-empty
so most everything shut down
We strays — the lost and homeless
were gathered in and fed
for weeks we’ve lived on kindness
all had a safe warm bed
And now the worst seems over
we’re anxious and afraid
our getting back to normal
will undo the progress made
It’s high time the view was different
(let the sceptics look askance)
homeless people are no problem
when they’re given half a chance!
or sometimes in the park
few other places we could stay
on nights so cold and dark
But then there came the panic —
some virus hit the town
it turned the streets near-empty
so most everything shut down
We strays — the lost and homeless
were gathered in and fed
for weeks we’ve lived on kindness
all had a safe warm bed
And now the worst seems over
we’re anxious and afraid
our getting back to normal
will undo the progress made
It’s high time the view was different
(let the sceptics look askance)
homeless people are no problem
when they’re given half a chance!
