I D Variable (Poetry)

09th August 2026
I knew myself when I was young
at least I thought I did
but you don’t know who you don’t know
when you are just a kid

Now I am old I’ve not a clue
to who I really am
I could be anyone at all
these days who gives a damn?

For since I’ve got to this late stage
it’s far too late to change
the mystery is set to stay
I’ll settle for I’m strange

Or near to normal by next week
more likely twice as cross
for being older can confuse
and leave one at a loss

Those times I can’t recall my name
all memory long-gone
I check the label in my shirt
some caring soul sewed on
