In Two Minds (Poetry)
22nd August 2021
Procrastination wins — I have to say
I’ve left undone what I planned yesterday
as for tomorrow — well, I’m in two minds
I s’pose it all depends — there are all kinds
of factors to consider — will it rain?
if so, I’ll have to think things through again
I once was more decisive — made a list
of all I had to do and seldom missed
the goals I set myself — the easy score
of progress I imagined mattered more
than simply sitting back and letting life
trundle on — no panic, stress or strife
Tomorrow all too soon is yesterday
I’d rather leave the diary’s page to play
its guessing game and rarely will commit
to any entry chaining me to it
impetuous to some half-sane degree
I keep my options open — schedule free
If that’s a crime I’m guilty. Should they say
I’ve fallen off the treadmill — lost my way
grown deaf to all their buzzwords — clearly blind
not fit to be in charge of either mind
How the nag of duty loves to whinge and chide!
Who should I shoot? — my conscience can’t decide ...
I’ve left undone what I planned yesterday
as for tomorrow — well, I’m in two minds
I s’pose it all depends — there are all kinds
of factors to consider — will it rain?
if so, I’ll have to think things through again
I once was more decisive — made a list
of all I had to do and seldom missed
the goals I set myself — the easy score
of progress I imagined mattered more
than simply sitting back and letting life
trundle on — no panic, stress or strife
Tomorrow all too soon is yesterday
I’d rather leave the diary’s page to play
its guessing game and rarely will commit
to any entry chaining me to it
impetuous to some half-sane degree
I keep my options open — schedule free
