Inheritance (Poetry)

Blood’s catalogue of faults and flaws
identified can be leeched out
but over time gaps left behind
give homes to worms of fear and doubt

There in the gut they breed and grow
invade the heart, infest the head
like ghostly parasites from some
insane forefather long since dead

It seems there’s no effective purge
to kill whatever’s been passed on
though flesh may rot and bone break down
the curse of blood is far from gone

While generations might dilute
and hope bad elements grow weak
though love might lighten up the mix
there still remains a darker streak
