Keeping Quiet (Poetry)

Have they passed some new law against silence
so Peace & Quiet’s classed as a crime?
Have they banished the concept of ‘Restful’
so we’re battered by noise all the time?

Those few of us seeking the tranquil
environment free of life’s din
we cling to a concept outmoded
since the rent-a-gob neighbours moved in

While chainsaws outside hack at Nature
machinery whines and kids scream
shrill voices turn up their chav volume
till there’s barely a breath inbetween

It seems there’s no rest for the wicked
and we must have been labelled that way
when home is remodelled as Bedlam
and stress puts its seal on the day

So it’s earplugs and pills to the rescue
medication to calm and relax
while the rest of the world joins the chaos
and ignores the fresh blood on the tracks
