Kite (Poetry)
11th July 2021
I didn’t know just who I was
before you came to love me
I had this changing patch of sky
that hovered miles above me
The weather changed so frequently
it had me in a spin
happy/sad — I hardly knew
what country I was in
I swam with sharks, I basked and played
on every kind of beach
I never bothered much with rules
my heart was out of reach
You must have had a long lasso
to capture me that night
you hauled me in and ever since
I’m twitching like a kite
on a short string in a mad gale
I’m flapping to and fro
no sense in my direction and
afraid you might let go
before you came to love me
I had this changing patch of sky
that hovered miles above me
The weather changed so frequently
it had me in a spin
happy/sad — I hardly knew
what country I was in
I swam with sharks, I basked and played
on every kind of beach
I never bothered much with rules
my heart was out of reach
You must have had a long lasso
to capture me that night
you hauled me in and ever since
I’m twitching like a kite
on a short string in a mad gale
I’m flapping to and fro
no sense in my direction and
afraid you might let go
