Label (Poetry)
11th September 2011
Anyone else would have shredded it,
instead, you — the practical one —
folded its terse lines inwards,
taped it down, recycled it as a label,
probably never thinking that I
would peel it back, reveal
a recent letter as peversely poetic
as anything the parcel might contain.
The writer says his piece, economical with words,
advises you your mailing list is out of date,
the woman named died years ago — so please delete —
denies any interest in poetry, unfortunately.
