Lady In Waiting (Poetry)
02nd June 2019
You’ve gone into legend
my dark darling prince —
those vows made when dying
sustain me — convince
that you wait in your tomb
and you’ll surely arise
when the gold trumpet sounds
through the blood-coloured skies
When your country most needs you
you’ll turn in your grave
and you’ll answer that call
for your spirit is brave
your flesh uncorrupted
your eye just as bright
as you fold back the earth
and make ready to fight
There are poems about you
fine paintings abound
while your name on the map
marks your place in the ground
where I leave you this flower
and dream of the day
you return and reclaim
all that death took away
I’m your lady in waiting —
my heart remains true
but I’ve aged while the years
can do nothing to you
while your legend’s untarnished
the world fosters hate
so come back to your kingdom
the hour grows late
my dark darling prince —
those vows made when dying
sustain me — convince
that you wait in your tomb
and you’ll surely arise
when the gold trumpet sounds
through the blood-coloured skies
When your country most needs you
you’ll turn in your grave
and you’ll answer that call
for your spirit is brave
your flesh uncorrupted
your eye just as bright
as you fold back the earth
and make ready to fight
There are poems about you
fine paintings abound
while your name on the map
marks your place in the ground
where I leave you this flower
and dream of the day
you return and reclaim
all that death took away
I’m your lady in waiting —
my heart remains true
but I’ve aged while the years
can do nothing to you
while your legend’s untarnished
the world fosters hate
so come back to your kingdom
the hour grows late
