Lament For The Christmas Post (Poetry)

We’re still waiting for a letter
from an old friend far away
their latest news along with greetings
should arrive here any day

But the letterbox stays silent
there’s no post van at the gate
just another disappointment
for all those like us who wait

There is no consideration
for those folk depending on
personal communication
the days of pen-and-ink near-gone

Yet some of us cling to tradition
the email cannot quite convey
like the card that comes handwritten
bringing smiles to warm the day

In years gone by hard-working posties
delivered far and wide by bike
such steady souls would not have dreamed of
spoiling Christmas with a strike
