Last Rites (Poetry)

Give death its due rest
so Gaia can do
those rituals deemed best
go cycling through
biology’s stages —
conception and birth
plus tedious ages
existing on earth

Then after demise
when careless and cold
the old rule applies
exceptions won’t hold
let ruined flesh rot
and allow DNA
to loiter (or not)
sink back in the clay
