Lead on, McGough (Poetry)

We need more poets in the world
and far less politicians.
Let’s vote for conservationists
and veto statisticians.

Philosophers should take control —
we’d be better off with dreamers
than all these double-talking suits
and underhanded schemers.

The New Religion should be Truth —
its universal declaration
for all humanitarians
whatever race or nation.

The main objective being clear —
equality plus timing
recycling in clever ways
the near-lost art of rhyming.

Who might take up the party’s push
for full poetic power —
compose a manifesto aimed
to liberate the hour?

Lead on, McGough! To victory
with words your sharpest tools.
Re-educate via poetry
taught wittily in schools.
