Legacy (Poetry)

They’ve called “Last Orders!” and it’s time to go
drink up all that we ever knew of life
the hour’s late — the dregs of joy and woe
linger in the glass — such echoes rife
with bitter-sweet nostalgia — passing dreams
collected in the diary of our years
no absolute conclusion so it seems
to settle doubts arising from old fears

We go out into that unending night
with hope and faith and trust close to our chest
praying these will hold us good and tight
and our last journey lead to perfect rest
we’ve watched so many go this way before
and now it is our turn to face the dark
without a map and search for that far shore
content to know we leave behind our mark

to say we’ve lived and tasted Earth’s best wine
toasted life with family and friends
seen the world and dreamed of things divine
accepting at some point our story ends
and Fate decrees it’s time that we depart
safe harbour lights still burning on and on
like memories to warm each grieving heart
for Love endures long after we are gone
