Lent (Poetry)

22nd March 2010
An empty earth where sky dips low to meet
a wild horizon conjured in his mind —
contrasting chill and overwhelming heat
where thoughts get lost and reason’s hard to find —
he wanders aimless — searching in the sand
for grains of truth to help him understand.

Regret’s a shadow dogging at his heels —
relentless days stretch hollow to endure
rogue doubts and hunger when all hope congeals
with fasting — purging pain to leave him pure
to face his destiny with spirit strong —
unflinching in his faith he’ll go along

with fate: look waiting death in its cruel eye
have all the world as witness to the crime —
fulfil his part in what was prophesied —
to rise again — God’s victory sublime ...

But now alone in this forsaken place
he’s human — terror haunts his weary face.
