Letting You Go (Poetry)
31st August 2019
I don’t remember the fun as such
I barely recall any laughter
just the bickering over nothing much
and the long silences after
There wasn’t much real tenderness
no echo now remains
the vows of neverendingness
went up in lukewarm flames
You tossed in a few vague promises
too casual for needing to keep
and doubt sang a dozen choruses
on those nights that I couldn’t sleep
In the end I could see no point in it
though I struggled to let you go
it was Hell-and-a-half getting over it —
what possessed me to love you so?
I barely recall any laughter
just the bickering over nothing much
and the long silences after
There wasn’t much real tenderness
no echo now remains
the vows of neverendingness
went up in lukewarm flames
You tossed in a few vague promises
too casual for needing to keep
and doubt sang a dozen choruses
on those nights that I couldn’t sleep
In the end I could see no point in it
though I struggled to let you go
it was Hell-and-a-half getting over it —
what possessed me to love you so?
