Life As A Rose (Poetry)

20th March 2016
I dreamed I was a rose
you were my worm
I sheltered you
and nurtured in my heart
though love meant pain
it thrilled me at the start
but then you gnawed right through
every tender part.

A nightmare once your need
had chewed me thin
I fed you from my flesh
all summer long
I shared my nectar thoughts
while you grew strong
and wrecked me in the process
served me wrong.

Then I awoke to truth
found you were changed
love’s metamorphosis
is cruel that way
your nature made it clear
you never planned to stay
abandoned me to age’s
gradual decay.
