Liferaft (Poetry)
16th November 2021
Where is the body that used to be mine?
Where is the spirit that used to float free?
Where is the certainty all will be fine?
What in tarnation has happened to me?
Time’s the big bully who bruises the skin
Age is his shadow who thieves through the night
Illness will trespass and sneak its way in
Hope the false friend who when needed takes flight
So what is the answer when old beliefs fail?
Who do we turn to to put the world right?
Where is the voice that hits Truth on the nail?
And why does Faith falter and slip out of sight?
The hour is late and the remedies few
Time can’t be fought like some giant in a play
While Illness and Age get the better of you
One dream proves the anchor that doesn’t give way
Both body and spirit hold fast to that dream
The things we most long for can keep us alive
Despite just how useless the wreckage might seem
Our dreams build a liferaft to help us survive
