Life's Little Sham (Poetry)

I wasn’t like the rest
I couldn’t be the best
So I settled for something less
Typically

I tried to do my bit
But got no points for it
My face just didn’t fit
Politically

I dreamed a quiet life —
No trouble and no strife
But I never was an average wife
Domestically

And it’s too late to change now
Not sure I want to anyhow
Old habits can’t (or won’t) allow
Genetically

So I’m stuck the way I am —
Playing out life’s little sham
As if anyone gives a damn
Tragically
