Limits (Poetry)
29th January 2012
Forever ran out yesterday —
they called it quits and so agreed
each in their differing way
that love had changed itself — evolved
from something with a joyful hold
to suffocating need.
Time has tricked them — they’d believed
love immutable as gold —
untouchable — they were naive
and trusted blindly — promised — swore
their passion deathless evermore —
such fire could not grow cold.
Why would they dream eternity
has limits and a plan to end
what’s infinite — the he and she
who thought themselves inseparable
now insular — feel vulnerable —
see strangers in their friends.
they called it quits and so agreed
each in their differing way
that love had changed itself — evolved
from something with a joyful hold
to suffocating need.
Time has tricked them — they’d believed
love immutable as gold —
untouchable — they were naive
and trusted blindly — promised — swore
their passion deathless evermore —
such fire could not grow cold.
Why would they dream eternity
has limits and a plan to end
what’s infinite — the he and she
who thought themselves inseparable
now insular — feel vulnerable —
see strangers in their friends.
