Loose Thread (Poetry)
04th December 2022
Tense —
I need to learn how to relax
to unbutton the tightness of the day
slip off its well-worn tweedy kind of coat
and hang it somewhere safely out of sight
It is a garment grown too heavyweight
hem dragging weary hours underfoot
cuffs catching — fabric nervous — hooked and frayed
by the usual lateness clocks cannot forgive
Sleep will not renew the cloth entirely
for the creases run too permanently deep
but darkness brushes up against the sleeve
and the nap releases stress eventually
Sheer tiredness undoes me seam by seam
close stitches slacken — the tailoring unfits itself
thus in these sorry rags I lay me down
turn out old pockets — find the loose thread of
some dream
and allow it to unwind ...
