Lost in the Layers (Poetry)

LOST IN THE LAYERS

Sly snow
thief-in-the-night-silent
falls on its prey
covering devouring
greedy for everything
sparing nothing
cold as a surgeon suffocating
stopping the mouths
stopping the pain
everything nerveless bloodless godless
no colour living anywhere
no pity for the starving homeless
deaf to prayers it falls regardless
without anger without passion
dealing death and hiding bodies
muted earth plays placid victim all
thin protests enveloped and sent
where small unheard screams go lightly
snagged on branches
ignored by the wind
ruined by apathy
ice crystal hearts
unable to feel
so free in their falling
blameless flakes of spite
the softest murder
soothed slowly laid
poignantly upon the unprotected
heads bow to take the weight
layer after layer
consigned to a soundless world
condemned to sleep.
