Love and Snow (Poetry)

23rd December 2010
The sudden hush of it —
the sky-descending aural crush of it
that smothers thought —
alters the light’s slant on things —
binds brightness to disguises — smooths
the roughness of the world —
makes beauty possible.

This transformation has a lifespan
limited as breath
for nothing lasts
and forever’s over in an eyeblink
even as the snowflake forms its unique
                                crystal pattern
it is doomed to melt.

So fleeting — all those kisses fierce
as August sun
that couldn’t warm November —
failing fast...

and Winter love is just as fickle —
fading in the end
to whispers layered —
piling in poor light —
a ghost of magic that was never
meant to stay.
