Monotony (Poetry)

10th May 2020
Another day that’s just the same —
so little variation
we’re playing the survival game
along with the whole nation

A game of playing safe indoors
and keeping well away
from others while we do the chores
hedge our bets — and pray

Monotony’s the enemy
it undermines the will
the rebel dreams of breaking free
the spirit can’t sit still

but wanders down forbidden streets
the memory’s old store
of so-mundane but much-missed treats
that now we hanker for

Another day draws to its close
sheer tedium runs rife
who’ll break the pattern no one knows
it’s not a patch on life
