More Than Enough (Poetry)

05th May 2024
We can all howl —
there’s absolutely nothing new in that
but it’s boring Al
less is more and, frankly, it’s old hat

The protest song or poem’s done to death
banged out in the sixties breath by breath
and ever since
the message has bled through
pages, airwaves, concerts to convince
all who read or hear
those words ring true

But you go on and on and on and on
no doubt your poet’s heart’s in the right place
but my attention wanders — focus gone
worn out, I shut you out
I rest my case

As literature’s assessed they call you
giant
your reputation rests on this relentless blast —
                                        this ear-piercing yowl
my poems stand
dwarfed
                                        but I remain defiant

Do please stop your bawling Al
go chill at last — give it a rest —
                                        throw in the red-rag towel!
