Mousecatcher General (Poetry)

Cold-blooded and cruel, a half-human being,
a rodent assassin — no sense and no feeling,
his talents perverted, for only a louse
invents a new method to murder a mouse.

So, what sort of mind (if he has one at all)
is intent on destroying a creature so small
and defenceless? He’s surely no likeable chap
to design such a callous and sickening trap.

The mouse knows no better, he panders to need,
his instinct is simple — he’s programmed to breed
and though less than welcome to share board and bed,
most wish he’d move on but there’s few wish him dead.

And to think of him drowning makes bitter bile rise —
what fiend could condone it? Who would not despise
the pitiless brain that devised such a fate ?
Shame that small man with his heart full of hate!
