Natives Unfriendly (Poetry)

17th February 2025
Not really hostile
‘reserved’ might be more
accurate — let’s say
those chilly stares seem
less than welcoming

Travellers merely
passing through report
a keen awkwardness
left feeling they’ve been
barely tolerated

Strangers mean business
therefore trade happens
but begrudgingly
transactions polite
yet frost nips the air

Would-be settlers come
with hopeful faces
view dwelling-places
where they might retire
relax in the sun

Labelled aliens
city outsiders
who can’t quite fathom
old tribal customs
beat a swift retreat
