Never The One (Poetry)
27th January 2019
I wish I thought someone had ever loved me —
I wish I’d been the focus of their joy
I wish my name had held the ring of magic
for just one soul — one person — man or boy
I wish I’d been the goddess in his vision
an angel with a moonstruck violin
the one love in his life that truly mattered
the passion that eclipsed ’most everything
One flame that never dies but keeps on burning
faithful and untarnished for all time
written on his heart — a declaration
of deep commitment — changeless and sublime
If I believed someone had ever loved me
worshipped at my altar — lingered there
flesh on flesh — mind floating in the ether
enraptured by the scent of skin and hair
that knowledge might have soothed and thus sustained me
I’d feed upon the memory and dream
of kisses — the sweet agonies of romance
and sip the wine in fields still lush and green
I wish I’d been the focus of their joy
I wish my name had held the ring of magic
for just one soul — one person — man or boy
I wish I’d been the goddess in his vision
an angel with a moonstruck violin
the one love in his life that truly mattered
the passion that eclipsed ’most everything
One flame that never dies but keeps on burning
faithful and untarnished for all time
written on his heart — a declaration
of deep commitment — changeless and sublime
If I believed someone had ever loved me
worshipped at my altar — lingered there
flesh on flesh — mind floating in the ether
enraptured by the scent of skin and hair
that knowledge might have soothed and thus sustained me
I’d feed upon the memory and dream
of kisses — the sweet agonies of romance
and sip the wine in fields still lush and green
