No Callers (Poetry)

09th May 2017
Another day — another horror
but no one really cares too much
about the wars in other countries
and the poor beggar with his crutch

Here comes the pop star in his limo
and there’s the tycoon with his yacht
the household names who hog the headlines
the famous film stars people watch

Spend twenty pounds to play the numbers
give fifty pence to charity
and if, by chance, they win the big one
they’ll plump for no publicity

There’s some posh mansion in the country
that every dreamer’s aiming for
it has a sign that says NO CALLERS
in big black letters by its door

Another wall — another prison
where Taxman sends enormous bills
enough to feed a thousand homeless
the rich man takes a dozen pills ...

Another world — free from all worry
(somebody’s paid to rake the drive)
so out of touch — cocooned by money
they barely know they’re still alive
