No Peace (Poetry)

08th September 2013
If there is no peace
to be found at home
no door to shut
that is strong enough
to keep out
the crowding ugly
interfering rabble
of the world
if there’s
no soothing sense
of refuge
to be had
between
familiar walls
amongst trusted
well-loved things
where the soul belongs
and breath can quieten
itself and slow
to a less frantic
rhythm
if there can be
no place to stay
secure
unthreatened
by a callous mob
that seeks to steal
deprive the sensitive
and vulnerable
of sanctuary
anywhere
on earth
and there’s
no asylum or
safe haven
however far
remote
and unobtrusive
such modest space
so-wishing
to stay hidden
if there remains
no private room
with locks
inviolate
against laws
designed for
faceless agencies
to trespass
with impunity
then all the wars
men ever fought
are lost
and peace thrown
from its tower
lives nowhere now
roams the world
uncertain
dispossessed
and sour
sorrow
taints the
aching
air.
