Nothing (Poetry)
19th May 2013
“What are you doing?”
“Nothing.”
“What do you mean, nothing?”
(Silence, then a sigh)
“I’m waiting for an answer —
cat got your tongue?”
“I was thinking.”
“Oh, thinking! That explains it! That’s what you’ve been doing
all alone up here for hours in your room...
So, what have you been thinking, then?”
(Fidget, frown and frantic blinking.)
“Nothing.” (In a sad, small voice.)
“Ah, we’re back to that again.
Well, I’m warning you, my girl,
this nonsense has to stop or else
the men in crisp white coats will come for you.”
“Nothing.”
“What do you mean, nothing?”
(Silence, then a sigh)
“I’m waiting for an answer —
cat got your tongue?”
“I was thinking.”
“Oh, thinking! That explains it! That’s what you’ve been doing
