Now It's Come To This (Poetry)

20th April 2025
Born mid-Thirties and
therefore too young to
remember the War
a grown man by the
fabulous Sixties

He shook off his roots
and bettered himself
trained hard to obtain
an engineering
qualification

Moved South — got a job
a wife, a mortgage
and fathered a son
this church-going man
good neighbour and friend

Worked till retirement
his wife passed away
a widower then
alone in his home
too much time to think

His late eighties and
fighting dementia
his carers call round
he can’t remember
the reason they come
