O Bitter Moon (Poetry)

O bitter moon — you spread insanity
and carve me cold in silver where I stand
your strange allure unsettles gravity
with fickle tides and promises like sand

that trickles through the glass and then is gone
you are unmoved by howling — deaf to tears
but float aloof — your sour face shines on
untouched by all you’ve witnessed through the years

If you’re a goddess then you lack a heart
or any nerve that measures human pain
what frigid nature lets you stay apart
so uninvolved while lovers weep in vain?

Since science stripped away your ancient mask
and claimed you’re nothing more than dusty rock
how is it that your mystery outlasts
that revelation — overrides the shock?

The stubborn cling to legends obsolete
believing that you rule the realm of dreams
your subtle intervention beams discreet
as aid to love’s most delicate of schemes ...

Yet

That pallid face you show the world is cold
O bitter moon that look’s so full of lies!
your glamour’s false — the glimmer of fool’s gold
hence even deathless passion wanes and dies!
