Oh Let There Be Light (Poetry)
14th May 2019
Oh let there be light
and the lamps be turned on
now the holes have been filled
and the men have all gone
But we’re left with the darkness —
abandoned to night —
not a gleam nor a glimmer
no flicker in sight
They buried the cable
that carries the juice
but until it’s connected
it’s no earthly use
We’ve been waiting so patient
for one cheerful spark
to offer enlightenment —
banish the dark
Yet still nothing happens
one more day’s nearly done
with our hopes fading fast
that the lamps will come on

So what took them so long —
ten full days just to fix —
when God managed the whole
of creation in six?
and the lamps be turned on
now the holes have been filled
and the men have all gone
But we’re left with the darkness —
abandoned to night —
not a gleam nor a glimmer
no flicker in sight
They buried the cable
that carries the juice
but until it’s connected
it’s no earthly use
We’ve been waiting so patient
for one cheerful spark
to offer enlightenment —
banish the dark
Yet still nothing happens
one more day’s nearly done
with our hopes fading fast
that the lamps will come on
