On A Crumpled Piece Of Paper (Poetry)

09th August 2015
On a crumpled piece of paper
in a long-unopened drawer
are the thoughts I didn’t send you —
desperate words you never saw.

I doubt they would have made much difference
had you known the way I felt.
It seemed the game was all but over —
every card that Fate had dealt

lay face up upon the table —
all, that is, except for one.
I kept back the heartless joker
until after you had gone.

It was a wild, unreasoned letter
written in a fit of rage
’til the agony of passion
had me screw up that sad page —

throw it in a drawer and lock it
where it’s been for all this time
so you never knew what sorrow
coursed through every crazy line.
