On St. George's Day (Poetry)

23rd April 2021
Today’s his birthday
a long-lost boyfriend
one that got away
married someone else
almost glad to say

Her daddy was rich
so the story went
I’m the girl he ditched
for better or worse
disengaged — unhitched

Nigh on fifty years
since the dirty deed
angry bitter tears
salt the memory
love’s grief disappears

While the scar’s grown faint
this date rings a bell
irony seems quaint
they chose not to name
him after the saint

His nature displayed
no valiant trait
when cold greed betrayed
he wed the dragon
instead of the maid
