Origins (Poetry)

What is this creature we classify ‘poet’?
born with a pen grafted onto his paw —
the unlikely half-breed accursed as odd progeny
of angel plus demon — a rare combination
sparking a war in its unhappy blood

So restless of nature — graffiti on paper
brooding and lonely inside
always hungry for some impossible love
and bent on seeking perfection
examines the ugly
to nail what is real
in words that transform
unravel — provide the code-key
unlocking the spirit’s
most intimate plan
for the journey ahead
through dark realms (those
old books of the dead)
and true understanding
of all that’s long past —
the curve that continues
connecting — holds fast
affording a glimpse —
how far we have come
who we are — why we’re here
and just what it might mean
to be close to human
