Otter, Abhainn Rath (Poety)

Bold v-formation ripples broke
the placid surface of a pool
betrayed a head triangular
with pale moustache that stiffly swept
the clouded water’s apathy.

A solitary otter swam
displayed prodigious appetite
pursued aquatic hunting rights
in fast efficient sport

and grasped each squirming fishy feast
in needled jaws for keen despatch
then sated by his piscine catch
he rolled ecstatically
upon the rugged grassy bank.

His careless rapture filled the air
with chirruping infectious cries
like incantations to the skies
dispelling winter’s frown.

And I alone was witness to
this private showing of his play
so privileged and in lighter mood
went gladly on my way.
