Parchment (Poetry)

21st July 2025
They said there’d be thunder
around 2am
so I stayed awake but
I waited in vain

Not a grumble or growl
nor a rumbling threat
the trees stood there gasping
the pavements unwet

The dark bound in parchment
the storm didn’t show
the sky held its secret
and wouldn’t let go

despite dust-dry tension
and shadows stretched thin
the odd croaking whisper
the leaves listening ...

I drifted on watch
woke to a fresh dawn
swimming in gush
of rain on the lawn

I swear I heard thanks
like soft mist arise
from a million glad mouths
that gulped in surprise
