Passeggiata (Poetry)

02nd January 2012
Evening in the streets — the air is full
of humour, hints of wine where voices blend
and tides of chatter lap well-mellowed stones
the atmosphere convivial with charm
inviting all to take a pleasant stroll —
join in the gathering as when in Rome.

Night plays the smiling host while strangers talk
relaxed and soaking in the social ease
of habit — flags and flowers decorate
the balconies and fountains speak in tongues —
their water-language mingles old and new
with no translation needed — meaning spreads

with the undertow of laughter city-wide
the chink of glasses toasting friendship’s bond
only statues hold their silence looking down
to witness love-struck couples starry-eyed
who hug the shadows lost in their own bliss
while the flow of life around them pulses strong.

(Passeggiata is the art of taking a walk in the evening for the purpose of socializing)
