Payback Still Pending (Poetry)
02nd June 2024
They’ve wrecked the wildwood
torn its treeline down
to house the spillage
from the bloated town
built more brickbox homes
The land lies wounded
mourns each tree that fell
and clouds hang heavy
where birds have flown to
none are left to tell
All that green ruined
its population
scattered refugees
poor dumb avian
natives of those trees
Ancient tracks smothered
earth is crushed beneath
black soulless tarmac
death to every leaf
where cars poison air
More countryside lost
Nature dispossessed
a reckoning broods
in some future nest ...
Hitchcock knew his birds
torn its treeline down
to house the spillage
from the bloated town
built more brickbox homes
The land lies wounded
mourns each tree that fell
and clouds hang heavy
where birds have flown to
none are left to tell
All that green ruined
its population
scattered refugees
poor dumb avian
natives of those trees
Ancient tracks smothered
earth is crushed beneath
black soulless tarmac
death to every leaf
where cars poison air
More countryside lost
Nature dispossessed
a reckoning broods
in some future nest ...
Hitchcock knew his birds
